Gary Player was born on November 1, 1935, in Johannesburg, South
Africa. The son of a gold miner, Player lost his mother at the age
of eight. Player wrote that her loss had a profound effect on his
life even at an early age.
Taking
up the game at 14, he turned professional at age 18 and quickly
established himself as the man to beat in Africa, Europe and Australia.
By the time he was of legal age he had won 10 tournaments and in
1956 he won the South African Open. Shortly after he was invited
to play in his first Masters with a personal invitation from Bobby
Jones. Once in the U.S. he began an intensified exercise regimen
and learned how to hit the ball further in order to compete with
the game's best professionals.
Player, like most Scorpios, is a tireless worker who practiced
and prepared himself for tournament play with an obsession. His
desire to win overcame an unorthodox swing and the limitations imposed
by his 5-7, 160 pound frame. With the best all around bunker game
in golf and a self-imposed strict regimen of diet and exercise,
he willed himself to win.
With his trademark black attire (inspired by his love of westerns)
Player is inarguably the best international golfer ever and has traveled
more miles than any other sports personality in history. He holds
the record for winning at least one sanctioned international tournament
a year for 27 years running. Now in his sixth decade as a professional
golfer he continues to compete on the Champions Tour and extol the
virtues of fitness and health.
