Walter Hagen was undoubtably golf's greatest showman. With a flamboyant
style, princely manner and colorful dress, "The Haig"
or "Sir Walter" captivated the public and his fellow professionals
like no other player in history. His skill as a golfer was often
overshadowed by his image but make no mistake he was one of the
greatest golfers of all time.
 Hagen
is credited with opening the doors to professionals who up until
the latter half of the century were not allowed into the clubhouse.
He won so many tournaments and in such lavish style that it served
to create a new attitude toward the playing professional. This was
a major breakthrough in the socially exclusive world of golf at
the time.
Born December 21, 1892 in Rochester, New York, Hagen, the son of
a blacksmith, came to golf as a caddy but always aspired to greatness.
An imposing six feet tall, with slick black hair and draped in the
finest fabrics, Hagen made a dashing figure. His grand gestures
and manner disguised the fact that he came from modest beginnings,
yet his attraction to the common fan was immediate. A twinkle in
his eye and a resolution to live big made him a legend among his
peers.
Hagen, a true Sagittarius, had the ability to shake off the bad shots
and understood that the only shot that matters is the next one. He
had a model attitude during competition and never complained about
bad breaks. He is generally considered the best match player of all
time, winning an incredible 32 out of 33 matches in the PGA from 1921
to 1928. An erratic driver of the ball, Hagen made up for his inconsistencies
with an uncanny ability to get the ball into the hole.
